CHAPTER TWELVE

Tim was out of his rack at oh-six-thirty. Movement and low voices on the other side of the connecting door told him Noah and Lucas were up and functioning. Lucas answered Tim’s knock, and after a brief discussion, he called in a room service order while Noah and Tim showered.

Lucas was in the shower when the food arrived and they didn’t wait for him. At oh-seven-thirty, all three were in uniform, files secured in Tim’s briefcase, and out the door to meet their transport in front of the hotel.

Sergeant Kozlov’s arrival was slightly early; he’d probably anticipated having to round up his passengers. He stopped the Humvee in front of the hotel, not even shutting off the engine. Lucas opened a rear door and slid into the seat while Noah walked around the back of the victor and climbed in.

“Good morning, Sergeant,” Tim greeted brightly as he settled into the passenger seat. He slapped the booted toe just behind his own shoulder. “Good morning, Corporal Langford,” Tim called up to the Marine in the turret. Both men returned his greeting in a friendly manner.

Their movement through the streets was slow but steady, as foot traffic flowed all around them. Coalition troops of all flavors staged here, before moving out into the surrounding areas on their various missions.

Sergeant Kozlov pulled up to a multi-story office building, parking the Humvee, nose in, next to a line of other victors. “This is Coalition HQ,” the sergeant explained. “SOCOM works out of here, along with the C.I.A. and MI6.”

The elevator functioned but they were Marines, so they took the stairs up two short flights. The offices occupied by U.S. Forces were bustling. An Army lieutenant showed them to a small office. Sergeant Kozlov made a formal introduction of the small, hawkish Army colonel as he stepped around his paper-covered desk.

“Sirs, this is Colonel Steven Matthews,” Kozlov said. “He’s in charge of troop assignments, as well as force fulfillment and depletion. Colonel Matthews, may I present Major Timothy Madison. The True Alpha of the U.S. Armed Forces is Staff Sergeant Noah Hammond, and his Dominant, Captain Lucas Young.”

Colonel Matthews shook their hands vigorously, greeting each of them as if he was perfectly happy to be dealing with three Marines. He dismissed Sergeant Kozlov, confirming the sergeant and Corporal Langford would be with the Humvee.

“Staff Sergeant Hammond,” Matthews said, when the sergeant had left, “It’s good to have you here.” He gestured for them all to settle around a conference table. There was already a large bottle of water in front of each chair. “And Captain Young, it’s an honor to meet you. The shifters are very excited, having the True Alpha and Dominant close by. The Zone is damn near buzzing.”

“Thank you, Colonel,” Noah replied. “While there are many places I would rather be than Iraq, I’m glad to be of whatever help I can.”

“I hope our presence here isn’t too disruptive,” Lucas said, always pragmatic.

Matthews waved away Lucas’ concern with a negligent hand. “Everyone’s on their best behavior.
